Geographic Coverage

The location of the collected biodiversity data was on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Kalimantan is the third-largest island. Within this island, lies an attractive ecosystem that stores many types of endemic flora and fauna threatened with extinction (Salim, et.al., 2020). All researches conducted were within the territory of Indonesia and it covers four provinces, namely Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan. The studies were conducted in various areas, such as conservation areas (nature reserves, national parks), protected forests, forest areas with special purposes (KHDTK), natural tourism parks, community forests, mine reclamation areas, industrial plantation forests, and palm oil plantations. In terms of habitat type, our dataset contained plants and animals found in mangroves, coastal areas, peat swamp forests, natural tropical rain forests, tidal swamps, burned peat forest areas, and monoculture plantations.

Bounding Coordinates South West [-4.127, 108.896], North East [4.609, 118.96]

Taxonomic Coverage

The dataset was a compilation of species and genera from the kingdom Plantae and Animalia found in Kalimantan. We excluded all studies that contain taxon identification at the family level or above during the data capturing. Project Data

This dataset was a part of a collaborative project between BNF and UGM entitled ‘Supporting Conservation Through Mobilization of Ecological Data from Kalimantan.’ BIFA funded the project with the primary aim to publish ecological data on the GBIF platform to make these data accessible and available online to data users (open-source). As one of the contributors, UGM through Wildlife Laboratory, Faculty of Forestry initiated a project to digitize and mobilize data from the thesis abstract of Faculty of Forestry’s students accessed on Electronic Theses and Dissertations of Universitas Gadjah Mada (ETD UGM). Despite the challenges and differences in goals that each level of the thesis has (i.e., undergraduate, master, doctoral), the publication can be trusted because it was taken by competent students and has been assessed and approved by the examination committee and thus can be a reliable data source to users other than the student and their mentor. Hence, we created the Biodiversity of Kalimantan dataset and published it on the GBIF platform. We considered that information collected by students whose research location took place in Kalimantan and published in the theses could be an excellent contribution to the global biodiversity database.

Title Supporting Conservation Through Mobilisation of Ecological Data from Kalimantan, Indonesia
Identifier BIFA5_017
Funding Biodiversity Information Fund for Asia (BIFA) and Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF)
Study Area Description This dataset contained the records of plants and animals list of Kalimantan Island that covers four provinces: Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan. The locations listed in our dataset were the actual locations where the research was conducted (the year the thesis was completed). Nowadays, several study sites experienced changes in the administrative area caused by the division and merging of regions in the development of regional planning in Indonesia. Therefore, we strongly encourage dataset users to pay attention to the year the research was done regarding the administrative address. In addition, the written coordinates in this dataset were the center coordinates of the research location. Due to almost all of these not writing the exact point, we retrieved information as closely as possible using available information, for instance, company names, regions, or names of protected areas.
Design Description The data in this dataset was obtained from the UGM Repository, and we accessed it through http://etd.repository.ugm.ac.id/. We used Kalimantan as a keyword to find any thesis whose data collections were in Kalimantan at the search bar. On the ‘Asal Institusi’ options, we only checked anything related to the Faculty of Forestry UGM. Then, we clicked the thesis titles that appeared in this search one by one. We learned the abstracts and identified species names written on them, and every species name was digitized as occurrence records on Microsoft Excel. Through this work, we aim to: (a) Mobilize biodiversity data from Kalimantan, Indonesia based on student theses and dissertations to support conservation activities as part of a project collaboration between Borneo Nature Foundation and Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada; (b) Improve national and international community access towards research products of Universitas Gadjah Mada; and (c) Increase opportunities for future international research collaborations.

Sampling Methods

The methods used to collect animal data consisted of various sampling methods i.e., line transects, strip transects, scan sampling, focus animal sampling, live traps, camera traps, interviews, and visual encounter surveys. Meanwhile, plant data were collected using vegetation plots, ocular estimation, quadrant method, stratified sampling, and herbarium.

Study Extent This dataset presents occurrence records covering four provinces, i.e., West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan. Due to the limited information on the exact location of the sampling plots and any coordinates accessed from the research abstract, the coordinates presented here were the center coordinates of the research location area. The authors mentioned in their thesis general study locations, such as the name of the national park, company, and sub-district, which helped us find center coordinate information. The companies whose forest areas used as research locations are HPH Dwima Group, HPH Itciku, PT. Berau Coal, PT. Daya Sakti Timber Corporation, PT. Dwimajaya Utama, PT. Finnantara Intiga, PT. Inhutani I, UMH Meraang, PT Inhutani II Sub unit HTI Senakin, PT. Kayu Tribuana Rama, PT. Kelian Equatorial Mining, PT. Kusuma Perkasawana, PT. Sari Bumi Kusuma, PT. Sarmiento Parakanjta Timber, PT. Sindo Lumber, PT. Sumalindo, PT. Sumalindo Lestari Jaya-II, and PT. Surya Hutani Jaya. The protected areas used as a research site are Bukit Batikap Protected Forest, Gunung Palung National Park, Lamandau Wildlife Reserve, Sebangau National Park, Selat Laut Nature Reserve, Sungai Lesan Protected Forest, Tanjung Puting National Park, Teluk Adang Nature Reserve, and Teluk Lombok Kutai National Park. Most of the research was conducted in the company's concession areas: forests, either industrial plantations (monoculture, secondary forests) or natural forests. Several companies own more than one concession area, but the specific location of the plots (e.g., village, sub-district, or even plot names) was not always mentioned in the abstract. For studies where data collection plots were mentioned, we matched these locations with company documents published online to get the central coordinates. Some researchers also mentioned islands i.e. Maratua Island, Laut Island, Sangalaki Island, and Kembang Island. There were also forest with special purposes i.e. KHDTK Riam Kiwa and Tumbang Nusa. Whereas in community forest, we took the central coordinates of the sub-districts (Kecamatan) such as Tanjung Redeb, Pelaihari, Jekan Raya, and Jabiren Raya.
Quality Control The data came from students of the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada which have been verified by the supervising lecturer. After capturing the data from the theses, we did validation steps. The scientific names were verified by checking it through the GBIF backbone, global name resolver, journal articles, and some other related articles. Coordinates are confirmed through ArcGis, Google Maps, species distribution through IUCN and some related articles. We deleted dubious data that did not pass the validation process to make sure that the dataset had no fuzzy information.

Method step description:

  1. The data collected were abstracts from the final research by students of the Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKT UGM), which was carried out on the island of Kalimantan until the latest year (2021). We obtained the data from the UGM thesis and electronic dissertation repository at http://etd.repository.ugm.ac.id/. By default, the web interface is available in one language, Bahasa Indonesia. After entering the website home page, we searched with the keyword "Kalimantan'' and selected only research conducted by the Faculty of Forestry students.
  2. The selection panel is available as a feature of the website for filtering. We only selected based on "asal instansi" or origin of institutions which indicates the faculty or department affiliated with the research registered at UGM. We left out the "tahun" (year) and "jenis karya akhir" (final project type) selections. In filtering departments, since we want all types of final projects from students of the Faculty of Forestry, we were looking for departments that are affiliated with the Faculty of Forestry and unselected irrelevant departments. Following are departments related to the Faculty of Forestry (in Bahasa Indonesia) that we used for filtering the data: (1) Bachelor thesis consist of, (a) S1 KEHUTANAN; (b) S1 MANAJEMEN HUTAN; (c) S1 BUDIDAYA HUTAN; (d) S1 KONSERVASI SUMBER DAYA HUTAN; (e) KONSERV. SUMBER DAYA HUTAN; (f) BUDIDAYA HUTAN; (g) TEKNOLOGI HASIL HUTAN; and (h) MANAJEMEN HUTAN; (2) Master thesis consist of, (a) S2 Ilmu Kehutanan; (b) S2 Kehutanan; (c) MAGISTER ILMU KEHUTANAN; (d) S2 ILMU KEHUTANAN/MKSDAL; (e) S2 Ilmu Kehutanan (Manaj. Konservasi Sumberdaya Al; (f) S2 I.Kehutanan/MKSDAL; (g) S2 Ilmu Kehutanan (Magister Konservasi Sumber Daya; (3) Doctoral thesis consist of, (a) S3 Ilmu Kehutanan; (b) DOKTOR ILMU KEHUTANAN.
  3. We found 289 final project documents after filtering. However, not all studies were recorded in our dataset. Given that our core dataset was a species checklist with occurrence extension, we only included entries containing species names of both plants and/or animals in the abstract. While collecting information for the dataset, we made sure that the abstracts we recorded were only those that included identification at the genus level or below (species, subspecies or varieties). We excluded all abstracts that provided identification at the family level or above.
  4. We followed Darwin Core code for variable column naming, also during recording information to the dataset according to what information can be retrieved from the repository website.
  5. To get the central coordinate, we used additional documents of a company, protected area, or region found on the internet. As an example of a survey in a plantation forest company, we looked for the company profile or report to get the map details, matched it to the specific site of the study, and captured the center coordinates. We used online Google Maps and GIS software to help us get the coordinates.
  6. We used accepted scientific names for this dataset. We entered the original scientific name written on the abstracts on the verbatimScientificName column. Then, we cross checked the names through IUCN, GBIF Backbone Taxonomy, and Global Name Resolver. After we got the accepted names for all the species, we entered the column scientificName.
  7. Besides the common names in Indonesia, we also wrote local names usually used in Kalimantan on the vernacularName column. We found a lot of data that have no vernacular names. In order to give complete information for the users, we tried to search the local names on the internet and other literature.
  8. All data in this dataset had been through validation processes. We deleted the fuzzy or incomplete data to avoid misinformation.
  9. The final datasets were also checked through the GBIF validator before we published it to ensure there are no inconsistencies.

Purpose

As the world class university in tropical forestry science, Faculty of Forestry UGM has been contributing to conduct research in Kalimantan, one of the islands with the highest biodiversity in the world. Almost every year, forestry students actively collect data regarding Kalimantan biodiversity for their theses. Unfortunately, their incredible works are mostly not widely unpublished and only end up as a graduation requirement. Hence, we produced this dataset to escalate national and international community access towards research products of the Faculty of Forestry UGM. Besides that, we also created this dataset to support conservation efforts in Kalimantan by increasing data availability for biodiversity research and analysis so that it can be used as a data-based consideration in conservation policy decision making.

Maintenance Description This plants and animals list of Kalimantan Island has the possibility to be updated according to the needs.
