Description

Buffalo Museum of Science Fishes consists of mainly freshwater fishes from Western New York. Specimens range from 1928 to present with large survey from 1970s.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,706 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

The Buffalo Museum of Science (BMS) was awarded $242,925 in IMLS Museums for America support for the rehousing, conservation, cataloging, databasing, and imaging of its fluid preserved Ichthyological Collection. This collection is of critical research importance as it documents the population of regional waterways. Previously in suboptimal conditions and lacking a comprehensive catalog, the collection was unknown and inaccessible for research and education. Comprised of material collected over the last century by the BMS staff, ‘orphaned’ collections received from retired university faculty, and voucher specimens placed at the BMS, the collection lacked cohesion and a comprehensive, uniform catalog. The work is now completed and data ready to be used.
