Description

The California Intertidal Biodiversity DNA Barcode Library Project will develop a standardized, openly accessible genetic reference database for organisms inhabiting the intertidal zone along California’s coastline.By coupling traditional morphological taxonomy with DNA sequencing, we will be able to improve our understanding of species biodiversity and lay the foundation for future long term monitoring.The California Intertidal Biodiversity DNA Barcode Library Project is funded by the State of California and the California Ocean Protection Council.

Geographic Coverage

This project is focussed on the intertidal zone of the State of California, United States of America. Some specimens from outside of that area may be included in datasets as part of taxonomic research projects.

Taxonomic Coverage

The charge of this program is to create a DNA barcode reference sequence for every species in the intertidal zone of the State of California, United States of America. Pragmatically, organisms of meiofauna size (approximately 50 micrometers) and larger are included. Emphasis is on algae and invertebrates, since vertebrates are generally better covered by other survey programs.
