Descrição
This dataset contains occurrence records and associated media of observations made by Mark Kummel between 2003 - 2024. It includes photographic records of flora, fauna, and their interactions, captured at various locations in California and nearby regions. Data are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Metadados Adicionais
Acknowledgements | This dataset was created by Mark Kummel, curated by the Cheadle Center and published by VertNet. The Vernon and Mary Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara is a research and education center dedicated to preserving and enhancing California’s natural heritage. The Center houses extensive natural history collections that support biodiversity research and scientific discovery. It also manages over 340 acres of campus open space, restoring native habitats such as coastal sage scrub, vernal pools, and wetlands. |

Introduction | This dataset comprises thousands of photographs primarily documenting the flora and fauna of the San Marcos Pass region, located in the mountains behind Santa Barbara, California. The images have been collected over more than four decades by a dedicated local naturalist and educator with a focus on accurate species identification and meticulous record keeping. Most photographs were taken in close proximity to the contributor's residence and serve as a long-term observational record of local plant biodiversity. Originally hosted on Fotolog, the photo archive has since migrated to Flickr under the username treebeard, where mark has over 6.9M views. The photographs were captured using a Nikon D800 camera, primarily with Nikkor 105mm micro, 18–200mm, and Tamron 200–500mm telephoto lenses. Basic post-processing was conducted using an older version of Paint Shop Pro (PSP), primarily to adjust curves, contrast, and cropping. The dataset supports ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive flora database for the region. |
Propósito | The dataset is intended to support ecological research, conservation efforts, and educational outreach by providing detailed visual documentation of a unique and understudied region. It is also being archived and shared online to make these observations widely available to scientists, educators, and the public. |
