Description

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ Non-molluscan Invertebrates Collection houses well over 1 million specimens representing more than 20 phyla. With lots dating from the 1850s to present, the Collection reflects over century and a half of collecting in freshwater, terrestrial, and marine habitats of the Carolinas, Mid-Atlantic Region, southeastern USA, and beyond. It includes one of the largest collections of freshwater crayfish in, and of, the southeastern USA, and a substantial and internationally significant myriapod collection. Additionally, numerous acquisitions of marine invertebrate collections from other regional institutions contributes to our status as one of the largest and most historically important collections of marine invertebrates in the Mid-Atlantic region. For easy reference, marine collections we have acquired come from the following institutions: Charleston Museum, Duke Marine Lab, University of North Carolina Institute of Marine Sciences, Southeastern Regional Taxonomic Center, and NOAA National Benthic Inventory (voucher specimens). We also have the University of Nebraska State Museum marine invertebrates collection.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 31,878 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
